Sergio Martinez overcomes brave Macklin, eyes bigger fights

Earlier tonight at The Theatre inside of Madison Square Garden in New York, the world’s recognized best middleweight, Sergio Martinez, overcame a very spirited effort from Birmingham, England’s Matthew Macklin.

Slow in the early rounds and dropped in the sixth frame, things were looking pretty weary for Martinez heading into the final stretch of the fight. But to the Argentinean’s credit, he would dig down deep and rally late in the fight, dominating as the championship rounds poured in.

So commanding was Martinez that he was able to drop a bloodied Macklin twice in round eleven, prompting his corner to waive the bout off in between rounds.

Pushing his record to 49-2-2 with 28 knockouts, Martinez will look to pursue bigger fights from this point forward.
