Wladimir Klitschko Goes for Knockout #50

In the days of yore before YouTube, Twitter, 24-hour news cycles, multimillion-dollar paydays, cable and casino deals, fighters fought often and being heavyweight champion of the world was better than being president. We worshipped the man who held that crown. We didn’t deride him when he had a dearth of talent to compete against. We were happy to see him fight when we could. In Joe Louis’ case, we were happy to hear him take on his famous “Bum of the Month Club” on the radio. Sure, at the time, the name was attached to Louis’ opposition because the man fought often and whomever he could, even if they mostly didn’t add up to much of a challenge. The simple fact of the matter is that a champion can only defend his title against the best available talent.

Fast forward to today on EPIXHD.com (live from the ESPIRIT Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany) where IBF,WBA and WBO heavyweight champion of the world Wladimir Klitschko, 56-3 (49), of Kiev, Ukraine, defends his title for the 11th time against Jean-Marc Mormeck, 36-4 (22), of Pantin, France. Mormeck was once a two-time cruiserweight champion. That was back in 2007. In 2012, he is a 39-year-old fighter who has fought three times since 2009, winning each heavyweight bout against opposition that was nostalgic, to be kind. He skipped all of 2011 but for some reason, in the crazy world of pro boxing, here he is challenging for all the marbles.

The fight should be called “Hey, it is what it is” or perhaps, as it is likely to be remembered, “Highlight Reel Knockout #50.”
